How to Roll a Hash Hole

Just as a reminder, a hash hole is almost the same as a standard joint. You use ground flower and a rolling paper, just like you would with a joint.

The one major change is the addition of a snake or tube of powerful concentrate (specifically, a solventless concentrate like rosin) to the center, as Leafly points out. With the snake in place, you get a double dose of cannabinoids – flower and concentrate – that’s perfect for experienced connoisseurs.

There are a few extra steps to take when rolling your hash hole, although the basic idea is very similar to a joint. If you’ve rolled joints before, you won’t have to go too far out of your comfort zone to get a hash hole going. Ready to learn how to roll a hash hole joint?

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Making sure you have everything you need for your hash hole makes the process so much easier. As you set up your hash hole rolling kit, you’ll need:

  • Flower. THC-A flower is a popular choice because THC-A converts into Delta 9 (the same cannabinoid found in cannabis) when heated. You’ll want between one and two grams of flower. Aim lower for your first few attempts.
  • Concentrate. Look for rosin that you can roll into a thin snake shape, or bubble hash you can sprinkle in a straight line across the bed of flower you’ll make on the paper. You’ll want about 0.25-0.5 grams of concentrate.
  • Grinder. You need to grind up your flower, just like you would for any joint.
  • Papers. Hash holes are big boys, so you’ll want to use a King Size or 1 ½” paper.
  • Crutch or filter. You can use a rolled-up piece of cardboard or a filter tip, your choice.
  • Rolling tray. Any large, flat surface can work, but a rolling tray with a lip around the edge will help you keep your flower contained and stop spills.
  • Cigar glue. A light application of cigar glue can make it easier to seal up your hash hole, although you don’t need it as long as your papers have a glue strip (which nearly all do).

Step 2. Get Everything Ready for Your Hash Hole

Grind your flower, roll out your hash snake (it should be thin and just a little shorter than the length of the paper minus the length of the filter or crutch), lay out your rolling paper on your tray or flat surface with one of the long edges facing you, and put the filter on one end. Keep your cigar glue, if you’re using it, near or on the tray as well.

Step 3. Add Most of the Flower

Put most of the flower, about 3/4ths of it, on the paper. Go up to the filter on that end and leave a little space on the opposite, open end. Leave some open space on both of the long sides of the paper.

Step 4. Add the Concentrate

Put your concentrate snake in the middle of the flower so that it spans from close to the filter to close to the open end of the paper.

Step 5. Add the Rest of the Flower

Put the remaining 1/4th of the flower on top of the snake, covering it so that it will sit in the middle of the rolled hash hole.

Step 6. Roll it Up

Carefully bring the two long edges of the paper together with your thumbs and index fingers. As Gutenberg Dank Pressing explains, roll the pinched paper back and forth to form a cylinder of flower and concentrate.

When the cylinder feels firm, roll the long paper edge touching your thumbs over the cylinder, so that it slips between the cylinder and the other side of the paper. Keep rolling it up with your thumbs and maintain even pressure with your index fingers, so you end up with the paper rolled over itself with the cylinder of hash and concentrate in the center.

Step 7. Seal it Up

Lick the glued edge of the paper and finish rolling the joint. Or, use the cigar glue to seal up your hash hole.

Step 8. Try and Try Again: Don’t Get Discouraged

Rolling a hash hole is often a process of trial and error, especially if you’ve never rolled a regular joint before (and, often, even if you have!). If you’re a joint rolling novice, our advice is to practice the process of rolling with just some flower first.

You can always break up your finished joint, or just not seal it, and keep practicing until your head and hands get a feel for the process. Once you do, you can try adding the hash snake and following the steps here again.

If you’re not too confident in your rolling skills, you can always use a hash hole roller. Specialized hash hole rolling machines exist for pre-rolled hash holes, but they’re relatively expensive and specialized pieces of equipment. For homemade hash holes, a traditional double-roller rolling machine can do the job.
