Does HHC-O Get You High? A Guide

TL;DR: HHC-O is a new, lab-created cannabinoid that can get you high, similar to Delta 9 THC. It’s legal federally but may be restricted in some states. User reports suggest it offers psychoactive effects and relaxation.

Main Points:

  • HHC-O Overview: A new cannabinoid created from CBD.
  • Legality: Federally legal, but check state laws.
  • Effects: User reports indicate it is psychoactive, similar to Delta 9.
  • Usage: Start with small doses to gauge effects.
  • Availability: Purchase from reputable brands with a focus on quality.

Ever since hemp-derived cannabinoids became legal, there’s been an explosion in the varieties available on the market.

Delta 9 was once the only cannabinoid most people had experience with. Now, there are plenty of options. That includes HHC-O, a very new cannabinoid that’s only been available for a few years.

What is HHC-O, and what sets it apart from other cannabinoids? Does HHC-O get you high, and what can you expect from it? Find the answers to these questions and more here.

Understanding HHC-O: The Basics

Have you been looking into HHC-O on your own? Or is this your first time hearing about this very new cannabinoid?

The one thing everyone has in common when it comes to HHC-O is that they’re still learning. HHC-O doesn’t appear to occur naturally in cannabis and hemp plants. Outside of specialized research, this chemical hasn’t been well-known up until very recently.

However, we can share what we know about HHC-O, including what makes it unique. We’ll also review the circumstances that led to HHC-O being developed and marketed in a variety of products.

How Did HHC-O Become Available?

The 2018 Farm Bill led to massive changes related to cannabinoids (the unique chemicals found in cannabis and hemp plants). This federal law legalized the commercial production of hemp, as the Brookings Institute explains. The only major restriction is that these plants can’t contain more than 0.3% Delta 9 THC by dry weight.

Delta 9 is the most well-known cannabinoid, largely because it’s the major chemical found in cannabis plants. However, many other cannabinoids have effects similar to those of Delta 9.

After the Farm Bill became law, it became clear that many of these other cannabinoids were federally legal. Delta 8, for example, has exploded in popularity since 2018.

Many of the first cannabinoids sold following the change in federal laws were already known to a degree, although not particularly popular. In the years since, brands and manufacturers have explored both naturally occurring cannabinoids and those that don’t exist naturally but can be created in lab settings.

HHC-O likely falls into that second category — cannabinoids that can be created through various chemical conversion processes. It doesn’t appear to occur naturally in cannabis or hemp plants. However, it may be the case that HHC-O simply hasn’t been found yet in these plants.

However, HHC does occur naturally in small amounts. HHC is converted into HHC-O by adding an oxygen molecule to its normal chemical structure.

As with many other federally legal cannabinoids, HHC-O is typically created by using cannabidiol (CBD) as a base. CBD is plentiful in hemp plants, offering brands a readily available chemical that can be easily converted into other cannabinoids. Through several steps in the lab, CBD turns into HHC, and HHC turns into HHC-O.

Is HHC-O Legal?

HHC-O is federally legal. It can be sold in and shipped to most states. However, some states, especially those with medicinal and/or recreational cannabis programs, restrict its sale and possession. Always look into relevant local and state laws related to HHC-O before making a purchase.

Does HHC-O Get You High?

Whether you’re looking for recreational or more practical effects (i.e. relaxation, potential pain relief) from cannabinoids, the crucial question is if a specific cannabinoid can deliver those effects.

When it comes to HHC-O effects, there isn’t any definitive research that proves HHC-O is psychoactive. In other words, no research shows that this cannabinoid has specific effects like elevating mood or increasing relaxation. That’s because it’s such a new chemical, not because it’s been researched and found to be inert or ineffective.

What we can look at to determine if HHC-O gets you high is user reports and reviews. User reviews of the products containing HHC-O that we currently offer are broadly positive. We also know that our brand partners that make products containing HHC-O have found HHC-O to be psychoactive—to produce a high—in their own internal testing.

Additionally, HHC appears to be more potent than Delta 8 but less potent than Delta 9, at least based on anecdotal evidence. HHC-O, with the addition of an oxygen molecule to the standard HHC structure, is thought to be more potent than HHC. So, we can speculate that HHC-O is one of the more potent cannabinoids, likely similar to Delta 9 in terms of its effects, if not slightly stronger.

Once again drawing on user reports, HHC-O effects don’t appear to be significantly different than those of other cannabinoids. Detail-oriented users may notice some differences in effects, but most cannabinoids ultimately produce similar experiences in the big picture.

Feelings like an elevated mood and an altered sense of perception are common with HHC-O and many other cannabinoids. An enhanced sense of creativity and an increased tendency to laugh are also common.

Some users of HHC-O may feel more relaxed or tranquil, while others can feel more talkative or excited. The best way to understand how HHC-O will affect you as an individual is to try a small dose (i.e., a half or a quarter of an edible or a light puff or two from a vape cart).

Wait for the effects to kick in fully, then see how you feel. If you enjoy HHC-O but want stronger effects, simply increase your dose in small steps (e.g., moving from a quarter of an edible to half or taking a few more puffs). This is a great way to try out new cannabinoids like HHC-O and test their effects on you as an individual without getting overwhelmed.
