TL;DR:
You should never put CBD oil or tinctures made for oral or topical use into a vape pen—doing so poses serious health risks. While CBD vape oil (aka CBD concentrate) is safe when designed specifically for vaping, traditional CBD oils and tinctures contain ingredients not meant for inhalation.
- Do not vape CBD oil or tinctures intended for oral or topical use.
- Only use CBD products clearly labeled for vaping, such as vape cartridges or disposables.
- Vaping the wrong product can cause health issues like lipoid pneumonia.
- Vape oil = CBD concentrate; traditional tincture ≠ vape-friendly.
- Buy from trusted brands with lab-tested products to ensure safety and clarity.

What are CBD Tinctures and Vape Pens?
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a type of chemical called a cannabinoid, found in both hemp and cannabis plants.
CBD stands out among many other cannabinoids because it doesn’t have strong psychoactive effects. In other words, CBD doesn’t lead to an altered sense of perception or elevated mood. Those qualities are common with many other cannabinoids (Delta 8 and THC-P are just a few examples).
Instead, CBD is known for helping to address concerns like anxiety, chronic pain, and insomnia, Harvard Health Publishing explains. It can change your state of mind in a positive way, but not in the same sense as other cannabinoids.
CBD is federally legal when it’s derived from hemp plants containing no more than 0.3% Delta 9 THC. That’s the major cannabinoid found in cannabis plants. The 2018 Farm Bill legalized commercial production of hemp meeting that standard. CBD made from hemp is legal in many states, and nearly every state allows the sale of CBD from either hemp or cannabis plants.
What are CBD Oils and Tinctures?
CBD oils and tinctures are liquid preparations that contain CBD. Oils are made with carrier oils – oils that are safe to consume or apply to the skin, although not to vape.
Tinctures, on the other hand, generally use a solvent (like alcohol or vinegar) to extract active ingredients from plants or other materials. The result is a CBD liquid commonly sold in a dropper bottle.
Tinctures and oils can be swallowed, like edibles, or held under the tongue for faster absorption. CBD oils and tinctures are very similar in this regard. However, there are key differences between oils and tinctures that you should be aware of.

What are Vape Pens?
Vape pens are a tool used to consume CBD and cannabinoid oil (sometimes called vape juice) designed specifically for vaping. Vapes are sold in two formats: separate cartridges and pens and self-contained disposable units.
Vape pens and other vaping devices work by heating the oil in the cartridge or reservoir. Eventually, it turns into a vapor. That vapor is then inhaled by the user.
Vaping is generally seen as convenient, discreet, and easy. In that sense, CBD vape pens and cartridges are similar to CBD tinctures. In the CBD tincture vs. vape debate, there are major differences (method of consumption) and strong similarities (effects on the user).
Can You Put CBD Tincture in a Vape Pen?
For safety’s sake, we want to be totally clear. Here are the answers to some commonly asked questions related to CBD tinctures and vape pens:
- Can you vape tincture? No, it’s not safe to vape any kind of tincture.
- Can you vape THC tincture? Can you vape CBD tincture? No! Do not vape THC or CBD tincture. Tinctures aren’t intended to be vaporized and inhaled.
- Can you put CBD oil drops in a vape? No, do not use any CBD oil designed for topical or oral use into a vape cartridge, even if it’s just a few drops.
- Can you put CBD oil in a disposable vape? The type of vape doesn’t matter – you should never use CBD oils or tinctures made to be used topically or orally in any kind of vape.
- Can you put tincture oil in a vape? Can you put CBD tincture in a vape pen? Again, no. While you could physically place tincture oil in a vape cartridge with the right tools, it has no benefit. You’d be left with a cartridge filled with a substance that isn’t safe to vape.
The same is true for all cannabinoid and CBD oils sold for topical and oral use. Do not vape these oils.
The liquid in a CBD vape cartridge or disposable vape is commonly referred to as vape oil or just oil. It’s also sometimes called CBD vape juice. However, they’re distinctly different products.
Don’t be confused by the lack of distinction in their common names. You should never vape CBD oil that’s sold for topical and oral use.
The good news is that the type of CBD oil made for vaping is sold in vape carts or disposable vapes. Oral and topical oils, on the other hand, are sold in bottles with dropper tops and other formats that make it clear they’re intended for topical and oral use.
It can help to think of the type of CBD oil sold for vaping as CBD concentrate instead. CBD concentrate and all cannabinoid concentrates are designed to be vaped safely.
Why Shouldn’t I Vape CBD Oils or Tinctures?
CBD tinctures and oils contain ingredients that help to extract, stabilize, flavor, and deliver CBD orally and topically. Some of those same ingredients, like carrier oils, are not intended to be heated to a high temperature, vaporized, and consumed. While they’re very safe when used as intended, but only when used as intended.
Serious health complications can stem from vaping CBD tinctures and oils. That includes a specific type of pneumonia called lipoid pneumonia. This affliction is caused by oil reaching the lungs and negatively affecting their usual functions.
